What’s Next: Cooler Days and Cooler Free Fun

harvest moon

This morning we woke to the cool comfort of a soft gray fog. The days previous have been unseasonably warm, but now as we move into Autumn–accompanied by the incredible beauty of an eclipse of the full harvest moon–we in the Bay Area are getting ready for fall.
Many homeowners are preparing for the predicted El Nino rains and are cleaning gutters and patching roofs.  Gardeners are mulching the drought resultant bare spots in the garden to prevent soil erosion, and downslope hill homeowners are stocking up on sandbags to keep potential floodwater from their property.

No matter where we are, every Californian has their fingers crossed for rainy winter, and by our actions we’re hoping to create a wet result.  But as they say, all work and no play make Jack a dull boy, so let’s see what free fun is in store for us this week!

What’s Next: New RE Regs & Local Free Fun

Classroom
It was an extremely warm weekend. All I could do was sip a cooling beverage while watching football.  Really, it was all I could do. If I had the fans the players have that mist them while blowing cool air I might have been able to do a lick of work, but I don’t.

Anyway, after a weekend of ups and downs (Not me. I kept pretty still. But my teams were a different story! Bears and Raiders: UP. Niners, a big DOWN) I’m heading for the Walnut Creek offices to learn about new legal and financial regulations in the Real Estate world.

Ordinarily I’d be resistant to spending 5 hours of my day in training , but this time I’m actually looking forward to it. It might not be the most fun a person can have, but I will be in relative comfort while improving my agency skill set. And I’m also well aware of how  important it is to stay on top of what’s happening in my industry. It’s the best way I know to give my clients the most informed service I can.

But let us now talk of fun.  Here’s a short list of what’s going on this week in the Bay area.  Enjoy:

TUESDAY September 22
Do a little lunchtime sketching around S.F.

What I Missed & What’s Next: Free Bay Area Fun

Solano Stroll

A lot of the work of a real estate broker often needs to be done when most people are playing or relaxing: evenings and weekends. Clients get home from work and need a question answered, so we find some of our evenings devoted to addressing inquiries and/or easing the fears and anxieties of our buyers or sellers.

Weekends, some home tours are a must if buyers have no time during the work week to look at houses. And, on the other side of the coin, if an agent is holding an open house Sundays–and sometimes Saturdays–are devoted to advertising, making the appropriate marketing materials, putting out  signs, and welcoming guests for the three or four hour time slot one needs to give buyers the opportunity to see the property properly.

As a result, some weekend fun, like last Sunday’s Solano Stroll pictured above and last Saturday’s Ghirardelli Chocolate festival my daughter loves, I have to miss.  I don’t feel that ill-used, though, because I live in the Bay Area, a place where there’s plenty of fun to be had all week long.  There’s always time to have fun, so here’s this week’s list of FREE local activities.

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 15TH
Free Money Day.  That’s right.  You heard me.

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 16TH
Jazz Wednesdays at Ozumo in Oakland

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 17TH
The Presidio as a silent movie set? Learn more.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 18TH
Real food festival in Oakland

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 19TH
Find out what’s under the surface of Lake Merritt

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 20TH
Free Sailboat rides on the Bay

Have a great time this week, and remember to give me a call if you need help with anything real estate related. As so many of us do, I carry my office with me wherever I go so just phone 510-527-0174.  I’m never too busy to take care of you– or your referrals–and I’ll make sure you’re glad you called.

What’s Next: Imperfect but Edible & Bay Area Free Fun

french supermarkets.

Did you know that the French are making it illegal to waste perfectly good food?  Supermarkets will be barred from deliberately spoiling unsold food so it cannot be eaten.  (They do that to prevent poor people who dumpster dive from getting ill from spoiled food.)

You can read more at the link above, but in short, the idea is that supermarkets will sign contracts with charities to get edible food nearing the pull date into the hands of people who are hungry.

Here in the Bay Area, a startup is collecting “imperfect” food and offering home and office delivery of “deliciously disfigured” food at a discount prices for folks in Berkeley, Oakland, and Emeryville.  Click here to get your own imperfect produce delivered to your door at a 30% discount off supermarket prices!

Now that we’ve got cheap dining covered, let’s see what fun, FREE activities are in store this week in the Bay Area.

What’s Next: Back to the Bay & Area Free Fun

hunter hill
View from the Hunter Hill Rest Stop in Vallejo

We had a lovely visit up north.  We saw our son play Prince Hal in Henry IV (part 1) and enjoyed our visit with him in Seattle. We had only a few complaints with our road trip. A few words to the wise if you’re traveling to the north country.

I now know why they call Ashland “Ashland”.  During fire season, and the California Lake County fires were raging,  the smoke converges in the valley.  Air is so bad people plan to be indoors for the duration. Thank goodness we were just traveling through.  The air didn’t sweeten until we hit the Rogue River area.

Then we endured Portland. It’s very crowded in Portland. Lots of people, lots of traffic.  Crossing the Columbia River we thought we were home free until we entered Olympia.  It took us THREE HOURS to travel the thirty miles to Tacoma.  Google promised us a 7.5 hour drive between Ashland and Mercer Island.  12 hours later we fly into the island parking lot almost as soon as the play began.

We made it, and enjoyed the rest of our stay, but I was so pleased when, on our return trip, we crested Hunter Hill in Vallejo and saw the beautiful Bay Area stretched out before us! HOME.

There really is no place like home, especially if you live in the Bay Area.  Here’s this weeks list of local Free Fun! Lots of music this week.

eI hope you’re enjoying your summer, and remember to give me a call if you’re thinking of  buying or selling a home, and for any and all of your other real estate needs.  Just phone 510-527-0174 .  I’m never too busy to take care of you– or your referrals–and I’ll make sure you’re glad you called.

What’s Next: Taking the Leap and Free Fun

bungee-jumping-in-Cancun

This Sunday I attended the birthday of an old friend. It was a small party, and most of the local members of his tribe of 4 kids were there.  Among them was his daughter who had just returned from a trip to Canada. For her dad’s birthday greeting, she videotaped a very exciting part of her vacation where she bungee jumped off a high bridge.  The message to her dad? “I’d jump off a bridge for you!”

Adorable, right? Of course, it was perfectly safe. They weigh you to make sure they use the right bungee cord to ease your fall, and check and recheck the bindings to be certain that you’re perfectly hooked up, but I could tell from the photo that when the time came to actually take the leap she wasn’t sure she wanted to risk it.

It’s often the same with moving. You know you want and need to, but no matter how well prepared you are, you never know exactly where or how you’ll land. When you decide to take that leap out of one home and into another, it can be scary.

That’s why a good agent is your best friend. I’ve been through the moving process more times than you ever will, with every client I work with and from both sides of the deal. Whether you’re selling or buying, I’m there to tend to every possible issue and make sure you’re landing is as smooth as it can be.

My friend’s daughter ended up exhilarated and excited by her experience. I hope, when you finally walk into your new life and new home, that you’ll feel that way too.

Now, let’s see what great free fun activities are available this week.

TUESDAY JULY 28th
Start of free kids summer camp at Stern Grove

WEDNESDAY JULY 29th
Free lunchtime concert at the Oakland City Center

THURSDAY JULY 30th
Guided Tour of the S.S. Pampanito in SF

FRIDAY JULY 31st

SATURDAY AUGUST 1st

SUNDAY AUGUST 2nd
Free First Sunday at the Oakland Museum

What’s Next: This Weeks Fun For YOU

fathers-day-quote-3

I hope you all had a great Father’s Day experience with either your dads or children or both.  My dad is gone, so it’s a melancholy time for me when I think of those days of used-to-be, but now that I have my own children to celebrate with, it certainly isn’t lonely.

My daughter took us to the Royal Cafe in Albany for breakfast. The Mama’s Royal Cafe in Oakland used to be a haunt of mine, but the newer one near my house is a terrific substitute.

After breakfast we went to see “Inside Out” brought to us by our favorite local filmmakers, Pixar.  It was a wonderful film that taught  while touching our hearts. Unforgettable!

The whole time we took advantage of modern communication to include the out-of-town youngest in everything we did, so it really did feel like the whole family was together.

In short, it was a great Father’s Day for me, full of fun and family. Now let’s plan for more with a selection of this week’s Free Fun Activities in the Bay Area.

TUESDAY
Author Alex Dolan discusses his latest thriller.

What’s Next: Why Write about Budget Bay Area Fun?

have-fun

Some have asked me why I write a blog about Bay Area Fun on a budget.  I’m a real estate broker, after all.  Why not stick to writing about real estate? There are a couple of reasons.

The first is actually Real Estate related.  I’m gathering information for out -of-towners who are looking for a home in the Bay Area. They want to know what’s going on, what kind of entertainment and enjoyments they can expect when they come to live here.  I want to be able to tell them what’s available and how rich and full life around the Bay can be.

The second is an attempt on my part to help with the old budget.  Living in the Bay Area is an expensive proposition.  I want to  provide folks with an array of free or cheap events available, that are also interesting, exciting and really fun.

Speaking of which, here’s this week’s list of inexpensive treats in and around the Bay Area:

TUESDAY JUNE 9TH
Enjoy serene beauty at a Free day in the SF Botanical Garden

WEDNESDAY JUNE 10TH
$2 Tickets  for the Oakland A’s Game

THURSDAY JUNE 11TH
FREE movie night at the Orinda Theater

FRIDAY JUNE 12
Watch Women’s World Cup Soccer at the SF Civic Center

SATURDAY JUNE 13
Tour Andy Goldsworthy’s amazing sculptures at the Presidio

SUNDAY JUNE 14TH
FINAL DAY of the ProArts East Bay Open Studio

What’s Next: Free Fun with My Daughter in Mind

Thank-Heaven-For-Little-Girls-statuary-in-Nancys-Garden

I  grew up without a sister.  Sure, my mom was a constant, supportive presence in my life, but I never had to butt heads with a female sibling, so I wasn’t as prepared as some when we had our second child.

My daughter was born 30 years ago today.

She was the first of her sex for us and both sets of grandparents, and visions of dolls, girly outfits, and shopping sprees wafted through the minds of wife and grandmothers alike.  I don’t know what I expected. Possibly a gentler, easy, more pliable child then high energy boys.

Little did any of us know what a singular, amazing girl she would turn out to be, strong in head and heart.  No one made a doll out of her. She graced our family with lessons in authenticity and self-possession.    I would say she’s one of the strongest people I know, and she continues to be an inspiration in all our lives.

Today’s list of free fun was designed with her in mind, based on her varied interests.  Strolls around flower gardens, respect for women, innovative art of all kinds, and a love of the exotic are all things she would approve of.  I hope you enjoy these as well.

TUESDAY APRIL 14TH
Free admission to the SF Botanical Gardens: Perfect Spring Event

WEDNESDAY APRIL 15TH
Science not for girls? Not according to Rachel Swaby.

THURSDAY APRIL 16TH
Piedmont Avenue Art Stroll

FRIDAY APRIL 17TH
If you like innovative dance, you’ll love this

SATURDAY APRIL 18TH
The famous Cal Day: loads of free events, education & fun

SUNDAY APRIL 19TH
Cherry Blossom Festival Grand Parade

Enjoy your week!
