Monday 1-A-Day Fun for the Bay Area

El-PresidioIllustration620x390-550x314

I hope your 4th of July was terrific.  It’s often the main event for  many of us in the  Summer, and that’s as it should be because this holiday has it all.  First, most of us get the time off work.  Second, People generally get together as a family with parties large or small; or they head for  day-long festivals most of which include barbeque, beer, dancing, music, and games. To top it off, of course, there are huge firework displays!
Finding things to do that don’t feel like a let-down after the forth is difficult, but let’s see what fun FREE events we can dig up this week.

TUESDAY JULY 8TH
56 cent Pancake Day at iHop

WEDNESDAY JULY 9TH
Ode to Frida Kahlo at Cliff’s Variety in SF

THURSDAY JULY 10TH
Witness  an Archeological Dig in action at Pershing Square

FRIDAY JULY 11TH
Soul Concert at Crab Cove in Alameda

SATURDAY JULY 12TH
Pride & Prejudice: Free outdoor play in Berkeley

SUNDAY JULY 13TH
Japan Day Festival in Japantown

I know, no real sparklers here, but a lot of variety, which is a hallmark of the Bay Area.  If none of these appeal to you, there’s always the WORLD CUP!  In any case, enjoy your week!

The Quality of Optimism

We have a lot to be optimistic about, especially those of us living in the Bay Area.  Here, the job market is looking more robust, and the housing market is becoming a bit more balanced.

I’ve noticed more inventory of marketable properties as sellers take advantage of lovely Summer days to showcase their homes for sale.

Buyers, especially those with children at home, have the time it takes to research schools and neighborhoods to find the perfect location for a growing family before the next school year begins.

I recently heard Shawn Achor speak, and he had this to say about one of the qualities of optimism: it’s “The belief of the impermanance of the situation.”

That’s what we have going for us in the Bay Area: The belief in positive change.  That’s why business start-ups flourish here, housing markets are active and alive, and people just seem happier.

Financial Friday: Is the pendulum swinging back?

Sellers have the advantage,
but things are looking up for Buyers.

. . .because home inventory is increasing.

I’ve noticed it in the Bay Area, and nationally Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist said that the total housing inventory at the end of April jumped 16.8 percent to 2.29 million existing homes available for sale, which represents a 5.9-month supply at the current sales pace, up from 5.1 months in March. Unsold inventory is 6.5 percent higher than a year ago, when there was a 5.2-month supply.

“We’ll continue to see a balancing act between housing inventory and price growth, which remains stronger than normal simply because there have not been enough sellers in many areas. More inventory and increased new-home construction will help to foster healthy market conditions,” Yun added.

This Week’s One A Day (Mostly FREE) Fun in the Bay Area

train your dragon

It’s good to have a daughter who loves animation. She’s a budding artist and appreciates the skills and talents of the manga and anime world, as well as American offerings like Dreamworks and, very locally, Pixar Studios.

Having a person with this interest in the family means I can still go to movies like “How to Train Your Dragon II” and hold my head high.
I see it as an artistic pursuit.

Sure, maybe I wept a little at one particularly touching point in the film, but that’s a testimony to how well-done the animation was, right?

I think so too.

Anyway, let’s see what other (mostly FREE) activities–besides great movies–there are this week in the Bay Area:

TUESDAY JUNE 24TH
Alameda County Fair 2$ Tuesday
WEDNESDAY JUNE 25TH
The Flight Deck in Oakland‘s Theater Summer Reading Series
THURSDAY JUNE 26TH
USA vs Germany World Cup Viewing Party
FRIDAY JUNE 27TH
The Emerald Tablet presents reading performances in North Beach
SATURDAY JUNE 28TH
Comedy Showcase and Dance party At Pappy’s in Berkeley
SUNDAY JUNE 29TH
