August: The Best of Times, the Worst of Times

I was born in August, and as a result had mixed feelings about the arrival of my birthday.  On the one hand: party, presents, cake! On the other hand: School was right around the corner. As I grew I began to understand that adults (unless they were teachers–and, as I later learned, there was no free time for them either), never had the long, lazy summer vacations that I enjoyed as a boy.

Growing up was always something we kids longed to do, but little did we know that one of the things we’d wave good-bye to, besides hairless skin and being really short, were summer vacations.

I noticed to my horror that in my teenage and college years, when I needed money to use the car and go on dates, my summer vacation would have to be subsumed by my summer job or no dates for me. Then, in my young adulthood when I worked in the corporate world, vacations were scheduled, and usually only lasted a week or so.

As a real estate agent, when work and time off can happen anytime, I learned the value of small vacations, staycations, and keeping my ear to the ground to find interesting things to do on a daily basis no matter how my schedule looked.

So, speaking of that, here are a few fun things that caught my eye. These Bay Area activities will ease our way as we leave August behind and welcome the beginning of September.

International Vacations Right Here in the Bay Area

tea garden

Summer is slipping away and before we know it Fall will be here! If you didn’t get that vacation abroad–or even a trip to the woods–that you wanted, and you still yearn for a travel experience, you can’t beat the Bay Area for staycation opportunities.  Enjoy a taste of Japan at the Tea Gardens or Japantown, both in San Francisco.  There’s an Oakland Chinatown, too, if you don’t want to cross the bridge. In Berkeley, if you’re shopping for exotic food or fashion, you might enjoy the area near the corner of University and San Pablo. For a few more international ideas, take a look at this list.

6 Days of Summer Fun in Uncertain Weather

botanical garden

Visitors to the Bay Area ask me what it’s like to live in a climate that doesn’t have distinctive seasons.  We do too have seasons.  They just get a little mixed up is all.  So far, we’ve had winter days in spring that have slopped over into summer.  Spring came in a few days before summer officially started, then the summer fog rolled in and it felt like winter until about noon when the sun came out and our clothing layers come off. Now we’re looking at falling leaves, cool, foggy nights and mornings, and warm, warm afternoons. The presence of Orb spiders on the bushes and cottontails on the trails announce that autumn is around the corner. But before we pack up our summer clothing, our indian summer, if it’s true to form, will give us some of the hottest days of the year.

That being said, it’s a good idea to plan for both indoor and outdoor fun in the Bay Area, cause you never know what mom nature will be cooking up.  Here’s a few ideas, and bring remember to bring a coat:

TUESDAY AUGUST 9TH
The fabulous Golden Gate Botanical Gardens Free Day.

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 10TH
If you’d like to explore the 60’s here’s the tour for you.

THURSDAY AUGUST 11TH
Stand up comedy night at the Stork Club in Oakland

FRIDAY AUGUST 12TH
Closing party of the Fiesta Fridas Art Show in Oakland

SATURDAY AUGUST 13TH
Biggest Ever Rosie the Riveter Gathering in Richmond

SUNDAY AUGUST 14TH

If you enjoy the East Bay as much as I do and want to purchase a home here, give me a call. I love to help home buyers and sellers find a home wherever their hearts call them.

If you’re moving to another area, I can refer you to a trustworthy Coldwell Banker agent wherever you want or need to go in the US or the world. Coldwell Banker is an international real estate company.

Warmer Weather Means More Outdoor Bay Area Fun 4U

JH Park

July is a special month for me. It holds a couple of milestones that our family celebrates.  First, the wife and I had a July wedding on Treasure Island many, unmentionable years ago. It was a gorgeous day, a beautiful ceremony, and we’ve had many happy years since then. Also, our first child was born in July.  Again, another bright, momentous day in our lives.
And speaking of bright, July is usually one of the sunnier months in the Bay Area calendar. Earlier this month, though, it’s felt more like Fall. I hold onto hope that Summer really is here as the days are getting warmer and brighter. I’m sure the fog is lying in wait and biding its time, but this week looks to be a warm one so let’s see what opportunities for outdoor enjoyment there are and make hay while the sun shines.

TUESDAY JULY 26TH
How about a free workout session at Fort Mason?

WEDNESDAY JULY 27TH
Political Comedy with the famous SF Mime Troupe

THURSDAY JULY 28TH
Natural fireworks: The Delta Aquarid Meteor Shower

FRIDAY JULY 29TH
Curious about those Cranes? Take a tour of the Port of Oakland

SATURDAY JULY 30TH
Berkeley Kite Festival Begins TODAY

SUNDAY JULY 31ST
Get your Shakespeare on! See The Tempest at John Hinkel Park

Whatever you do, whatever you’ve got to celebrate, have a wonderful July Finale!

If you’re pursuing your dream of home ownership, or if you want to sell an East Bay home, I can help.  Summer is a great time to buy or sell a home.

Also, if you’re moving to another area, I can refer you to a trustworthy Coldwell Banker agent wherever you want or need to go in the US or the world. Coldwell Banker is an international real estate company.

Pokemon Go Crawl, and more Bay Area Entertainment

Ranch-house

I imagine you’re aware of Pokemon Go, the crazy, interactive game that gets people running around town looking for Pokemons. The Parents” Guide to Pokemons tells us this:

“Pokémon are creatures of all shapes and sizes who live in the wild or alongside humans. For the most part, Pokémon do not speak except to utter their names. Pokémon are raised and commanded by their owners (called “Trainers”). During their adventures, Pokémon grow and become more experienced and even, on occasion, evolve into stronger Pokémon. There are currently more than 700 creatures that inhabit the Pokémon universe.”

But it’s not just kids that “Gotta catch them all”.  Adults play the game too.  All you need is an Iphone and an App, and you’re set for the chase. This week, on Wednesday July 20th, there’s a Pokemon Go Crawl <(register at the link to your right) that will take you on a hunt all around San Francisco. Well, at least the game gets young and old outside and playing together.

If you have not caught Pokemon fever, here are some other activities around the Bay that you might enjoy.

SIX SPECIAL BAY AREA EVENTS THIS WEEK

happy-may-day

It doesn’t always follow that having my listing in escrow frees up my weekends.  As most agents will tell you, real estate tends to be a full time job in the fullest sense of the word, but the positives are how flexible my time can be.  Like many who work from home, I can work when I feel like it and play when I want. I’ve learned that there are many times when I actually feel like working, and when they come along I can call my clients or devise marketing strategies or organize a buyer home tour. I find I’m at my most productive and enjoy work more at these times.

I’ve learned that to everything there truly is a season, a time to work and a time to play, and speaking of playing, here’s what’s going on in the coming week.

TUESDAY April 26TH
Jazz and Funk in Albany? You bet. It’s at the Ivy Room.

WEDNESDAY April 27TH
Celebrate the life of Prince at the Elbo Room

THURSDAY APRIL 28th
If you love dance you’ll love come to the Starry Plow in Berkeley

FRIDAY APRIL 29th
Candlelit Labyrinth Walk in Berkeley

SATURDAY APRIL 30th
Soul Sanctuary Dance at AshKenaz

SUNDAY MAY 1st
Lot’s of Free first Sunday Museums to enjoy. Here’s a list:

Have a great time this week, Happy May Day, and REMEMBER:

If you’re looking to buy or sell an East Bay home, I can help you from both sides of the table. Locally, I can help you buy or sell your East Bay home. What’s Next: Fun Ways of Staying in Shape During the Holidays

santa-zumba

Did you, like me, spend the weekend in a football coma?

Sure, there was work to be done. Even during the holidays, when you’re a realtor, there’s no down time for us.

Home buyers, for various reasons, need to find homes no matter what the season. They need to establish or update a search profile and/or take home tours.

Buyers want advice about a property they’re thinking of selling, or want an update on their current home value.

Call me if you’d like and of these things yourself.

There’s also my own need to continually update my database to make sure my clients old and new are receiving what they need.

But in the mean time, there was a ton of football to watch.

Unfortunately, watching football and working on real estate are–generally–seated activities. These sedentary pursuits, added to the Thanksgiving feast, the office parties, and the gatherings of friends–in which rich, delicious food is always plentiful–and you’ve got the perfect recipe for adding a few more pounds to the pot (belly).

So what to do? I decided to devote today’s list of activities to those that help us get off the couch and out of the house, so here goes. We’ll start slow:

TUESDAY DECEMBER 1ST
See the world tallest tree lit up in SF

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 2ND
Go ice skating in Union Square

THURSDAY DECEMBER 3RD
Go dancing in Berkeley

FRIDAY DECEMBER 4TH
Head to Jack London Square for a bevy of seasonal activities

SATURDAY DECEMBER 5TH
Stroll around block fulls of art in Oakland

SUNDAY DECEMBER 6TH
Have a snowball fight in Berkeley

ENJOY!

If you’d like to use your holiday time off to begin the process of selling or buying a home, give me a call. I’m easy to contact.  As so many of us do, I carry my office with me wherever I go, so phone 510-527-0174.  and you’ll probably reach me. I’m never too busy to take care of you– or your referrals–and I’ll make sure you’re glad you called.

What’s Next: Tis the Season to be Spooky plus Bay Area Activities

tombstones

My creative daughter is a tireless seasonal decorator, and every year she provides us with more and different decorations to match each and every celebration.  Recently she transformed our home for Halloween.  Although we’re not in the “haunted house” league yet, she encourages our spook flag to fly with an assortment of outdoor lights, skeletons, spider webs, masks and ghosts designed to alert local parents and kids that OUR home has TREATS.

I remember what fun it was when our kids were of an age to race from house to house–along with an assortment of other little ninja turtles and Disney Princesses–dragging progressively fuller bags of candy.  It seems that the population of trick or treaters has gotten smaller lately, but no matter what, even if only one child shows up, our girl has made sure we’re ready!

Here are some activity treats for you this week. Hope you’re ready!

TUESDAY OCTOBER 20TH
Dia de los Muertos altar exhibition in Oakland

WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 21ST
$1 book sale at the S.F. Library

THURSDAY OCTOBER 22ND
Free Game Night at 924 Gilman in Berkeley

FRIDAY OCTOBER 23RD

SATURDAY OCTOBER 24TH

SUNDAY OCTOBER 25TH

FREE New Years Eve Fun in the Bay Area

happy_new_year_2015

2014 has been an amazing year in the Bay Area.  In sports, the Giants won the World Series and the 49ers lost Jim Harbaugh.

The California drought had Bay Area home owners letting their lush green lawns go brown.  It soon became source of pride and sign of community spirit. We were among the most water conserving communities in California.

Despite the lack of curb appeal, the housing market was bustling. Multiple over-list offers and very quick sales became the common thing, and no wonder.  2014 ushered in a rebounding bay area job market and there were plenty of newly employed ready to buy a home.

It’s been a year of highs and lows, and through it all it’s been my pleasure to present fun free activities for my readers to enjoy throughout 2014,  and it will be my pleasure continue on throughout 2015.  Now, let’s find a few fun FREE ways to spend your pre and apres New Year’s Eve.

TUESDAY DECEMBER 30th
Annual Bird Walk: Bird counting for the Audubon Society

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 31st
Westfield 3D Spectacular: Last Night
FREE New Year’s Eve Bar Hoping Bus in Oakland
New Year’s Eve Art Party

FIREWORKS OVER THE BAY!!

THURSDAY JANUARY 1ST 2015
Pacific Ocean Plunge at Ocean Beach

Have a happy, and safe, New Year’s Eve. I wish you and yours all the best in 2015,

And a reminder: if you’re thinking about selling your home in the new year, mortgage rates are low, and buyers abound!
If you’re interested in hiring an agent like me to help you through the process, give me a call at 510-527-0174 ,  I’m never too busy to take care of you or to handle your referrals.

One A Day Fun in the Bay Area

49ers_raiders_103700115

Well. The Battle of the Bay sure took a different turn. Who would have guessed the 49ers would lose to the Raiders? Not me, but since I’m a Bay Area kid and fan of both teams I didn’t get emotionally involved with the outcome.

Who am I kidding.  I couldn’t watch. Truth to tell, my heart still belongs to the Niners, but the poise and class evident in Quarterback Carr helped me envision a pro-Raider future with a little less bitterness.

But let’s speak no more of this. Instead, Let’s see what special events and activities are in store for us this week in the Bay Area.

TUESDAY DECEMBER 13TH
Christmas at the Indie Mart

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 14TH
Pay what you Can “Our Town” in Berkeley

THURSDAY DECEMBER 15TH
Free Movie Night at the Orinda Theater

FRIDAY DECEMBER 16TH
Estuary Art Attack in Oakland and Alameda

SATURDAY DECEMBER 17TH

SUNDAY DECEMBER 18TH
