What’s Next: Cooler Days and Cooler Free Fun

harvest moon

This morning we woke to the cool comfort of a soft gray fog. The days previous have been unseasonably warm, but now as we move into Autumn–accompanied by the incredible beauty of an eclipse of the full harvest moon–we in the Bay Area are getting ready for fall.
Many homeowners are preparing for the predicted El Nino rains and are cleaning gutters and patching roofs.  Gardeners are mulching the drought resultant bare spots in the garden to prevent soil erosion, and downslope hill homeowners are stocking up on sandbags to keep potential floodwater from their property.

No matter where we are, every Californian has their fingers crossed for rainy winter, and by our actions we’re hoping to create a wet result.  But as they say, all work and no play make Jack a dull boy, so let’s see what free fun is in store for us this week!

What’s Next: Restoring Richmond and Bay Area Free Fun

My wife has a love-hate relationship with our garden. It’s just a small patch, with more shade than we’d like and lots of hungry deer so vegetables are out, but what’s there she used to love to work with.  Now, the drought has put a damper on her enthusiasm.  She’s started to hate going into the garden because it’s
drying out.  We’re doing our best to preserve what’s there, and are ever hopeful that soon el nino will restore our tiny eden to its original glory.

Which brings me to Richmond. I don’t know if you know this, but if you’re looking for a gardener’s paradise, Richmond is the place. The climate and relatively flat yards are perfect for growing a lot of edible and beautiful plants.

60 years ago, North Richmond was such a rich growing area it was called “the Cabbage Patch”.  Now, vacant lots, scrap metal and car repair shops dominate the landscape.  Not for long, if Urban Tilth has anything to say about it. They’re determined to restore this area to its former glory and include a year around produce stand, bike repair and coffee shop with WiFi.  If you’d like to help, go to the site above to find out more.

If gardening is not on your list of favorite things to do, here are some more ideas for FREE fun in the Bay Area this week.

What’s Next: Henry IV & Other Fun Free Bay Area Activities

JH Park

Summer is Shakespeare time at our house. Our interest in the Bard was inevitable. Our youngest, an actor living in Seattle, has had the good fortune to be cast in multiple Shakespearean plays from his college days onward.  We routinely travel up north to see him do his thing. Last summer we saw a delightful production of Two Gentleman from Verona, and this summer he’s playing Prince Hal in Henry IV (part 1).

What does this have to do with the Bay Area you ask? I’m happy to tell you. You too can experience the joy of a free outdoor Shakespeare play. The Shotgun Players, a Berkeley Troupe we’ve enjoyed for many years, offer FREE plays in John Hinkel Park. This summer they, too, are presenting an outdoor production of Henry IV (part 1) at the park for the next few weekends.

Looks like I’m going to get a major dose of Prince Hal this summer. If you are not a fan of Shakespeare, let’s see what else is going on:

TUESDAY JULY 14
Golden Gate Youth Choral Festival begins in Berkeley

WEDNESDAY JULY 15
Tour the USS Pampanito and see what Sub life is all about

THURSDAY JULY 16
Yerba Buena Gallery Crawl

FRIDAY JULY 17
Free Harbor Tours on the SS Potomac

SATURDAY JULY 18
Saturday Art Tour in Oakland

SUNDAY JULY 19
Eats, Beats, and Brews Block Party in Berkeley

Have a terrific week!

Come to the Berkeley Book Festival!

Book Festival Map

I’ve always loved reading. There’s really nothing I like better than relaxing with a good book. When in the midst of an especially good one, I’ve been known to stay awake in the wee hours just to find a good stopping point, but that’s the trouble with a really well-written book; there are very few good stopping points.

Before I became an agent, I thought that I’d have lots of opportunities to spend reading. I imagined bringing a book with me on floor in the office, or during open homes, but I soon learned that real estate is a demanding job with very little time to goof off, especially now, with the local market being as hot as it is.

Still, Berkeley is a book lover’s town. When I was attending the university here, the fatal attraction of Moe’s Books right across the street from the Mediterranean Cafe would often keep me in that part of Telegraph Avenue far too long enjoying a new book and a delicious cup of coffee.

I bring all of this up because this weekend is the Bay Book Fest.  It’s a free festival in downtown Berkeley’s arts district with loads of activities for all ages including author talks, a teen & children’s stage, and good food! It’s happening June 6th and 7th and it’s FREE, so come to Berkeley and scratch that reader’s itch!

Free Fun in the Bay Area

Have a Memorable Memorial Day

It’s amazing how quiet it is. Passing the local cematary you can see tiny flags as plentiful as flowers on many of the graves.
I like to think that there’s a feeling of reverence on this day that hushes noisy celebrations, but more likely it’s that this Monday is not a work day.

The traffic noise near my home in Kensington is almost non-existent, consisting mostly of bikers heading for Tilden Park, dog walkers, and parents with kids looking forward to an day playing at the playgrounds, picnic tables, and open spaces around the community center.

It’s a day to remember, but it’s also a day to relax and enjoy being alive. I hope you’re enjoying this incredibly beautiful Memorial Day weekend.

Let’s take a look at what FREE FUN is in store for the rest of the week in the Bay Area:

TUESDAY MAY 27TH
Pub Trivia Nerd Night at Alameda’s Churchward Pub

WEDNESDAY MAY 28TH
Free Lecture: Living with Mountain Lions in San Rafael

THURSDAY MAY 29TH
See great Theater on a budget (“Daylighting”) at Shotgun in Berkeley

FRIDAY MAY 30TH
Friday Food Truck night at OMAC in Oakland

SATURDAY MAY 31ST

SUNDAY JUNE 1ST

I hope you enjoy your holiday!

For you Home Sellers or Buyers, whether you’re moving in or out of this amazing Bay Area, I’d be honored to help.

For SELLERS, I’ll help you prepare and market your home for sale that will give it the widest appeal and best exposure; thus attracting a bevy of buyers and the best chance for multiple offers and competitive bidding. To learn more, go to go to What’s Next Homes.

For BUYERS I’ll set up an REAlert account that will search the MLS real estate site–using requirements that you provide–for properties that meet your needs.  Once found, pictures and details will be delivered directly to your email courtesy of Coldwell Banker!

It’s the best way for you to get a look at first-time-on-the-market properties; and this saves you wasted time and disappointment that happens when you find the perfect home but discover it’s already been sold, a common occurrence when using the usual home finding sites like Trulio, Zillow, etc.  They are fun to search, but their information is often out of date. Not so with REAlert.

If you’re specifically interested in high walk score homes, click here to find those that are currently on the market in great East Bay neighborhoods. To learn more, go to go to That House Detective

Or, just give me a call at 510-527-0174.

1-A-Day Free Fun in the Bay Area

Super Sunday in the East Bay

Sunday was a pretty amazing day. The views from the Berkeley Hills home I was holding open were sparkling clear, and the home itself is lovely.  There were so many eager buyers I wasn’t lonesome at all or lacking in good conversation.  The place was packed. I felt like I was hosting a party, and all this despite, and possibly because of, the wonderful Himalayan Faire that was also taking place at nearby Live Oak Park in Berkeley.

Let’s see what free activities the coming week has in store:

TUESDAY MAY 20TH
Yoga at the Grace Cathedral Labyrinth

WEDNESDAY MAY 21ST
Free Circus Class at Circus Center in SF

THURSDAY MAY 22ND
$5 Night at the Asian Art Museum

FRIDAY MAY 23RD
Bites Off Broadway: Food Truck Block Party in Oakland

SATURDAY MAY 24TH
Free comedy showcase in Pappy’s Bar in Berkeley

SUNDAY MAY 25TH
Carnival Grand Parade in SF

1-A-Day Fun this week in the Bay Area

5th of May & Every Day Fun

The Cinco de Mayo festival in Richmond has grown in popularity. I regret to say I’ve never been, for Sunday–when they usually hold the celebration whether it’s the 5th of May or not–is a realtor’s busy day.
Each year I’m determined to take a break and enjoy the food, the sights, and the dancing that remind me of the many wonderful trips I’ve taken to Mexico. In fact, right now, just thinking about it fills me with the desire to begin trolling online vacation deals that will take me south of the border once again.

In the meantime, here’s a list of this weeks fun, FREE, or very cheap events right here in the Bay Area.

But first:
DON’T FORGET TO RESERVE YOUR RESTAURANT SEATING EARLY FOR DINNER OR BRUNCH ON MOTHERS DAY!

TUESDAY MAY 6th

WEDNESDAY MAY 7TH
SFMade festival: see what’s being manufactured locally
