What I Missed & What’s Next: Free Bay Area Fun

Solano Stroll

A lot of the work of a real estate broker often needs to be done when most people are playing or relaxing: evenings and weekends. Clients get home from work and need a question answered, so we find some of our evenings devoted to addressing inquiries and/or easing the fears and anxieties of our buyers or sellers.

Weekends, some home tours are a must if buyers have no time during the work week to look at houses. And, on the other side of the coin, if an agent is holding an open house Sundays–and sometimes Saturdays–are devoted to advertising, making the appropriate marketing materials, putting out  signs, and welcoming guests for the three or four hour time slot one needs to give buyers the opportunity to see the property properly.

As a result, some weekend fun, like last Sunday’s Solano Stroll pictured above and last Saturday’s Ghirardelli Chocolate festival my daughter loves, I have to miss.  I don’t feel that ill-used, though, because I live in the Bay Area, a place where there’s plenty of fun to be had all week long.  There’s always time to have fun, so here’s this week’s list of FREE local activities.

french supermarkets.

Did you know that the French are making it illegal to waste perfectly good food?  Supermarkets will be barred from deliberately spoiling unsold food so it cannot be eaten.  (They do that to prevent poor people who dumpster dive from getting ill from spoiled food.)

You can read more at the link above, but in short, the idea is that supermarkets will sign contracts with charities to get edible food nearing the pull date into the hands of people who are hungry.

Here in the Bay Area, a startup is collecting “imperfect” food and offering home and office delivery of “deliciously disfigured” food at a discount prices for folks in Berkeley, Oakland, and Emeryville.  Click here to get your own imperfect produce delivered to your door at a 30% discount off supermarket prices!

Now that we’ve got cheap dining covered, let’s see what fun, FREE activities are in store this week in the Bay Area.

What’s Next: Back to the Bay & Area Free Fun

hunter hill
View from the Hunter Hill Rest Stop in Vallejo

We had a lovely visit up north.  We saw our son play Prince Hal in Henry IV (part 1) and enjoyed our visit with him in Seattle. We had only a few complaints with our road trip. A few words to the wise if you’re traveling to the north country.

I now know why they call Ashland “Ashland”.  During fire season, and the California Lake County fires were raging,  the smoke converges in the valley.  Air is so bad people plan to be indoors for the duration. Thank goodness we were just traveling through.  The air didn’t sweeten until we hit the Rogue River area.

Then we endured Portland. It’s very crowded in Portland. Lots of people, lots of traffic.  Crossing the Columbia River we thought we were home free until we entered Olympia.  It took us THREE HOURS to travel the thirty miles to Tacoma.  Google promised us a 7.5 hour drive between Ashland and Mercer Island.  12 hours later we fly into the island parking lot almost as soon as the play began.

We made it, and enjoyed the rest of our stay, but I was so pleased when, on our return trip, we crested Hunter Hill in Vallejo and saw the beautiful Bay Area stretched out before us! HOME.

There really is no place like home, especially if you live in the Bay Area.  Here’s this weeks list of local Free Fun! Lots of music this week.

eI hope you’re enjoying your summer, and remember to give me a call if you’re thinking of  buying or selling a home, and for any and all of your other real estate needs.  Just phone 510-527-0174 .  I’m never too busy to take care of you– or your referrals–and I’ll make sure you’re glad you called.

What’s Next: My Anniversary and Bay Area Free Fun

wedding photo cropped

I don’t know if you noticed, but I usually skip a free activity on Monday.  Monday is the one day when just getting it together can be tough. It often takes a lot of energy just to make that first cup of coffee hoping it will help us rise up and meet the day.

Seizing the day is just not on.

But this year it has to be, because my wedding anniversary is next Monday.  I’m not saying which year, but the traditional gift for it is either something made with coral or jade; coral representing fertility and jade longevity.  I guess our three kids is proof we went through the coral years rather earlier in our marriage, so Jade it is.

Now, what will we do?  If any of you have any ideas, let me know! Here’s some ideas for you if you’re looking for FREE fun and enlightenment for the coming week.

TUESDAY JULY 21ST
Learn more about our starry, starry nights in SF

WEDNESDAY JULY 22ND
Walk and Wag in Emeryville, including a pet psychic

THURSDAY JULY 23RD

FRIDAY JULY 24TH
Last Day of the Rangoli Art Walk in San Ramon

SATURDAY JULY 25TH

SUNDAY JULY 26TH

What’s Next: Why Write about Budget Bay Area Fun?

have-fun

Some have asked me why I write a blog about Bay Area Fun on a budget.  I’m a real estate broker, after all.  Why not stick to writing about real estate? There are a couple of reasons.

The first is actually Real Estate related.  I’m gathering information for out -of-towners who are looking for a home in the Bay Area. They want to know what’s going on, what kind of entertainment and enjoyments they can expect when they come to live here.  I want to be able to tell them what’s available and how rich and full life around the Bay can be.

The second is an attempt on my part to help with the old budget.  Living in the Bay Area is an expensive proposition.  I want to  provide folks with an array of free or cheap events available, that are also interesting, exciting and really fun.

Speaking of which, here’s this week’s list of inexpensive treats in and around the Bay Area:

TUESDAY JUNE 9TH
Enjoy serene beauty at a Free day in the SF Botanical Garden

WEDNESDAY JUNE 10TH
$2 Tickets  for the Oakland A’s Game

THURSDAY JUNE 11TH
FREE movie night at the Orinda Theater

FRIDAY JUNE 12
Watch Women’s World Cup Soccer at the SF Civic Center

SATURDAY JUNE 13
Tour Andy Goldsworthy’s amazing sculptures at the Presidio

SUNDAY JUNE 14TH
FINAL DAY of the ProArts East Bay Open Studio

berkeley-vegan-earth-day

Things are getting lively in the Bay Area.  Festivals galore are coming up! This week alone we have the NOW festival, Oakland Veg Week, and Bay Area Dance Week starting up.  The weather has remained gorgeous, so outdoor entertainment is not so hit or miss as it has been in Aprils of yore where it was customary to  wear layers, bring umbrellas and mock tourists shivering in their flowered shirts, bermuda shorts and sleeveless dresses.

However you’re dressed (I’m still wearing layers, thank you very much) I hope you enjoy all the free activities this week.  Here’s a list of a few of them, one for each day.

TUESDAY APRIL 21
NOW festival in the Panhandle: lots of free fun to be had

WEDNESDAY APRIL 22
Save Water. Go Vegan. Oakland Veg Week tells you how.

THURSDAY APRIL 23
Warriors Playoff Parties

FRIDAY APRIL 24
Bay Area Dance Week Opens Today

SATURDAY APRIL 25
Saturday Stroll Oakland Art Walk

SUNDAY APRIL 26

What’s Next: Free Fun with My Daughter in Mind

Thank-Heaven-For-Little-Girls-statuary-in-Nancys-Garden

I  grew up without a sister.  Sure, my mom was a constant, supportive presence in my life, but I never had to butt heads with a female sibling, so I wasn’t as prepared as some when we had our second child.

My daughter was born 30 years ago today.

She was the first of her sex for us and both sets of grandparents, and visions of dolls, girly outfits, and shopping sprees wafted through the minds of wife and grandmothers alike.  I don’t know what I expected. Possibly a gentler, easy, more pliable child then high energy boys.

Little did any of us know what a singular, amazing girl she would turn out to be, strong in head and heart.  No one made a doll out of her. She graced our family with lessons in authenticity and self-possession.    I would say she’s one of the strongest people I know, and she continues to be an inspiration in all our lives.

Today’s list of free fun was designed with her in mind, based on her varied interests.  Strolls around flower gardens, respect for women, innovative art of all kinds, and a love of the exotic are all things she would approve of.  I hope you enjoy these as well.

TUESDAY APRIL 14TH
Free admission to the SF Botanical Gardens: Perfect Spring Event

WEDNESDAY APRIL 15TH
Science not for girls? Not according to Rachel Swaby.

THURSDAY APRIL 16TH
Piedmont Avenue Art Stroll

FRIDAY APRIL 17TH
If you like innovative dance, you’ll love this

SATURDAY APRIL 18TH
The famous Cal Day: loads of free events, education & fun

SUNDAY APRIL 19TH
Cherry Blossom Festival Grand Parade

Enjoy your week!

What’s Next: Marching into Fun

lion-dance

I just noticed that marching is a March feature.

Traditionally, metaphoric Lions march in and Lambs march out during this month–and this year you’ll see both if you watch the Lion Dancers marching in the San Francisco Chinese New Year’s Parade, because this year we’re celebrating the Year of the Ram.

You can also watch Irish, and Irish lovers,  march in the annual St. Patrick’s day Parade as well.

Or you can march to a distant drummer and do your own thing.  I hope this week’s list of free fun in the Bay Area will provide you with some inspiration.

TUESDAY MARCH 3RD
Free admission to many museums around the bay. Here’s a List.

WEDNESDAY MARCH 4TH
Your last chance to see the tall ships in Jack London Square

THURSDAY MARCH 5TH
Say Good-by to the Bay Lights & hear the artist speak

FRIDAY MARCH 6TH
First Friday Shorts at the Parkway

SATURDAY MARCH 7TH
Sick Plant Clinic at the UC Botanical Gardens

SUNDAY MARCH 8TH
Chinatown Street Fair

As you might expect, the year of the Ram is good for Real Estate. Want proof? Here’s a quote from FORTUNE, an online publication: about the economy in the year of the Sheep: “Earth industries will be stable, consistent performers, including businesses that deal with real estate”.

Hear that, you  East Bay home sellers? Even if it wasn’t the year of the Sheep,  this would still be a golden time to sell your home! Demand is high, and inventory and mortgages are low.  It can’t last forever, you know, so give me a call and let’s talk!

If you’re looking for a home in this amazing area, I can help you strategize for a successful purchase.

Weekly One-A-Day Fun: Your Keys to Enjoyment

se_Photos_OurCompany_HandingOverKeys_870x400px

I hope you all had fun last week.  I was playing bachelor myself, from Thursday until Sunday afternoon.  I gave the wife a trip to Seattle for her birthday/Valentine’s Day present.  She got to visit friends and see our youngest perform in a play.  She likes to binge watch, and took in four performances in as many days.

It would have been fun to travel with her–even though four performances might have been a little much for me–but I had several buyers who found homes they were interested in purchasing.  It’s of course, my job to write the offers so I’ve been tending to that.  It may not sound like fun per se,  but it’s truly a pleasure when I hand the keys over to proud new homeowners.

It’s why I do what I do.  That moment is among the many that makes my job as a real estate agent gratifying and fun.

And speaking of fun, let’s see what free activities are happening this week (February 24th to March 1st) in the Bay Area.

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 24TH
Tuesday Night art party at Era Art Bar Arts & Drafts in Oakland

WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 25TH
Noise Pop Festival ( Various Events and Venues all week)

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 26TH
Bear Country Funk & Dance party in Berkeley

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 27TH
12th Annual Ocean Film Festival-not free, but very cool.

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 28TH
Hot press typesetting fans head for the Presidio

SUNDAY MARCH 1ST
First Free Sunday at the Oakland Museum

Have a great week, and remember:

If any of you East Bay homeowners are ready to sell, this is a golden time for sellers.  If you’re looking for a home in this amazing area, I can help you strategize for a successful purchase.  Please give me a call at 510-527-0174 , I’m never too busy to take care of you– or your referrals–and I’ll make you glad you called.
