What’s Next? VACATION time & East Bay Free Fun

LEO

August is the coolest month as far as I’m concerned.  Why? because this is my birth month (hurray for me!) and that’s great but better yet, in a few weeks we’re going on vacation.

We’re road-tripping up north, praying for rain just to feel it’s cool freshness on our skin; but the usual drippy-ness of northern climes are elusive this year.  The weather has been so hot the average river temperature is in the 60’s, which is very hard on spawning salmon.

The drought is hard on all of us on the Best Coast, so no matter what you do this summer, save water, pray for El Nino, and have fun!

For those of you staycationing, here’s some free fun for you for the month of August

I hope you’ll enjoy the rest of your summer, and remember to be sure to give me a call if you’re thinking of  buying or selling a home, and for any and all of your other real estate needs.  Just phone 510-527-0174 .  I’m never too busy to take care of you– or your referrals–and I’ll make sure you’re glad you called.

Get to know me! Check me out on facebook, linkedIn or see my other online presences. I have two sites made just for you.If you want to get a feel for what’s going on in the East Bay Real Estate market

Check out my My New Site to discover homes on the market–neighborhood by neighborhood–almost as soon as they’re posted on the MLS!

What’s Next: Taking the Leap and Free Fun

bungee-jumping-in-Cancun

This Sunday I attended the birthday of an old friend. It was a small party, and most of the local members of his tribe of 4 kids were there.  Among them was his daughter who had just returned from a trip to Canada. For her dad’s birthday greeting, she videotaped a very exciting part of her vacation where she bungee jumped off a high bridge.  The message to her dad? “I’d jump off a bridge for you!”

Adorable, right? Of course, it was perfectly safe. They weigh you to make sure they use the right bungee cord to ease your fall, and check and recheck the bindings to be certain that you’re perfectly hooked up, but I could tell from the photo that when the time came to actually take the leap she wasn’t sure she wanted to risk it.

It’s often the same with moving. You know you want and need to, but no matter how well prepared you are, you never know exactly where or how you’ll land. When you decide to take that leap out of one home and into another, it can be scary.

That’s why a good agent is your best friend. I’ve been through the moving process more times than you ever will, with every client I work with and from both sides of the deal. Whether you’re selling or buying, I’m there to tend to every possible issue and make sure you’re landing is as smooth as it can be.

My friend’s daughter ended up exhilarated and excited by her experience. I hope, when you finally walk into your new life and new home, that you’ll feel that way too.

Now, let’s see what great free fun activities are available this week.

TUESDAY JULY 28th
Start of free kids summer camp at Stern Grove

WEDNESDAY JULY 29th
Free lunchtime concert at the Oakland City Center

THURSDAY JULY 30th

What’s Next: Foggy Fourth and This Weeks Fun

foggy fireworks

We always look forward to the Fourth of July in the Bay Area.  Why, I don’t know.  More often than not, like this year, the Bay fills up with fog and all we can do is hear the pops and bangs and explosions announcing the aural presence of beauty, but none of the visuals.

The week we went into San Francisco to view the fireworks on the spot, we were colder than we’ve ever been in the city, and we live here. We know to wear our layers. We wore our layers, and we were STILL icy cold.

The best Independence day we had was when we rented a couple of rooms at the hotel now known as the Double Tree and threw a party.   The fireworks off the Berkeley Pier were fantastic, and if we got cold (or board) we could go to our rooms.  Plus, we didn’t have to fight the crowds to get home.

Maybe next year we’ll try a dinner cruise.  Then, if it’s foggy, we’ll at least have a nice meal to enjoy.

If you’ve been looking for more to enjoy this week, here’s a day by day list of FREE activities and events this week.

TUESDAY JULY 7TH
Here’s an online list of FREE museum days

WEDNESDAY JULY 8TH
95 Rituals inspiring dance performance at the Hyde Street Pier

THURSDAY JULY 9TH

FRIDAY JULY 10TH
Summer Circus Day in Oakland

SATURDAY JULY 11TH
Free Artsy Conceptual Exercise Classes

SUNDAY JULY 12TH

Lots going on the the Bay Area.  I hope you have fun this week!

What’s Next: In which we consider Mother’s Day, and more Free fun in the Bay Area

pink-and-baby-stollers-bay-to-breakers

I hope you who are, have, or will be mothers enjoyed your day.

There was much discussion about the holiday online.  One argument by author Anne Lamott pokes holes in the sentimentalizing of one of the hardest jobs in the world. Thought provoking reading, but a bit harsh.

I think there is something satisfying about honoring our family goddesses, but the “let’s-get-this-over-with” offerings of flowers/cards/candy/brunch combined with the stilted mandatory phone call or visit makes the holiday a little hard to take.

Another post on a friends tumbler site suggested a way of celebrating the day that felt satisfying and right.  I’ll quote the steps she suggests to help us internalize the act of mothering:

  • We all live considering what would be good for the next generation.
  • We give up fossil fuel consumption like many expectant mothers gives up drinking, drugs and other substances that don’t nourish the lives of those to come.
  • We take real responsibility for others and balance the needs of others with our own.
  • We really love beyond self-interest.

Now,  that’s the kind of mindful care and kindness worth celebrating.  And speaking of celebrating, or having fun in general, let’s see what’s free and fun for the second week of May.

TUESDAY MAY 12TH
FREE admission to the SF Botanical Gardens

WEDNESDAY MAY 13TH

This week we’re taking a little vacation. We’re heading to Santa Cruz to take in some ocean views and the relaxing sound of the waves breaking on the beach.

It’s been a busy few months, and we need a bit of a recharge, a getaway from the seemingly endless duties of work and home.

Sometimes you have to have a change of scene, someplace away from your regular life where you can catch your breath and get some perspective; but if you can’t get away, there’s plenty to do right here in our beautiful Bay Area that can give you a new lease on life.

What’s Next: Free Fun April 7th to the 12th

RAIN

“Long stormy spring-time, wet contentious April, winter chilling the lap of very May; but at length the season of summer does come.”
Thomas Carlyle

Oh, how I wish it were so this April.  We get reports of rain, but it doesn’t come.  The flowers are already here, though.  We didn’t have to wait for may. Around the Berkeley area it’s fragrant and lovely.

I’m sure you, like me and my family, you’re doing your best to conserve as much water as possible, and I’m sure you have strategies in place as we do, but if you’d like more ideas this handy website has 100 ways to conserve water.

But enough of this.  It’s easy to get lost in worry. All we can do at this point is our best and hope for the same.  In the mean time, there are still places to go and people to meet.  Here’s this weeks (April 7th to April 12th) list of Free Fun in the Bay Area.

TUESDAY APRIL 7TH
FREE admission to great SF art galleries. Here’s an online list you can access.

FRIDAY APRIL 10TH

What’s Next: Remedies for Spring Fever

spring fever 111

Spring fever. Are you feeling it? The feet, or the heart, gets itchy and the gorgeous weather doesn’t help.  It makes us want to get out and go exploring.

Although the Bay Area weather has been unbelievably (and tragically for we water starved Californians) clear and beautiful, we’ve still been convinced it’s best to be in our respective places of business and doing our work.

But now it’s SPRING, and in the East Bay, with the ever-present scent of freshly blooming Jasmine intoxicating and enchanting us, we start to think we NEED, no DESERVE,  a vacation.

If you such a one who is eager to shake the dust off your feet and take a road trip, here’s a map designed to help you make the most out of an all-American tour.

If that’s too big a bite for you right now, here’s some other, more modest, free fun that might make you want to stick around town. Let’s take a look at what’s available this week.

TUESDAY MARCH 30TH
like cheese? Go to Whole Foods on Gilman for a tasting.

WEDNESDAY APRIL 1ST
Surround yourself with Spring at the Berkeley Botanical Garden

THURSDAY APRIL 2ND

FRIDAY APRIL 3RD

SATURDAY APRIL 4TH

SUNDAY APRIL 5TH

ViewHikes

I hope you’ve been enjoying the gorgeous Bay Area weather, punctuated only briefly (sadly) by last night’s downpour.  Still, It’s been mostly perfect for any and all outdoor activities.

We’ve been going on lots of walks, which pleases the dog no end.  We tend to take the same routes, though, either on the ridge above Tilden Park or by the water at Point Isabel. Free Fun in the Bay Area

stab in groups

Yes, today is the Ides of March, a date that has lived in infamy.

We saw our son play  Cassius, one of the instigators of the group that mowed Caesar down, in a production of Shakespeare’s play “Julius Caesar”.  It was a very effective representation of group dynamics at it’s most lethal.

Yesterday I learned on MPR that group dynamics actually creates the desire to do crazy, chance-taking behaviour in the minds of teen and pre-teen kids.  When alone, they behave like sensible people, but being in a group actually gives them a high that makes them feel invincible.

Most of us enjoy being in a group of people having fun, and if you’re a group instigator, perhaps you’d like to get a few people together to enjoy these fun FREE events in the Bay Area for the week beginning with March 17th through March 22nd.

TUESDAY MARCH 17TH
Tons of St. Pat’s Day Celebrations all around SF, but if you want something different, try Persian New Year in Berkeley

WEDNESDAY MARCH 18TH
Free Local Standup Comedy in San Francisco

THURSDAY MARCH 19TH
Free Pizza with your comedy in Oakland

FRIDAY MARCH 20TH
Free Friday Nights at OMCA Plus Food Trucks

SATURDAY MARCH 21ST
Spring Equinox Magic Ritual  Egg Hunt

SUNDAY MARCH 22ND
Create your own ritual for National Water Day.  Click the link for help. It’s a movement, an international group effort to heal and support what supports us:  water.

What’s Next: Free Fun

spats

Any Old Bears like myself remember Spats?

When I was a student, I went there a few times but I remember that it was called Olegs then.  I returned when I was a bachelor working at Fantasy Records. By then it was renamed Spats.  I took my now wife there to enjoy a meal and the funky atmosphere.  It was a place that felt casual and free-spirited, reflecting perfectly the way we wanted to feel after a day at work.

It closed up around 2009,  but now I hear Spats is coming back.  It’s great to see old Berkeley landmarks being restored to their former funkiness! I can’t wait to enjoy a meal and a beverage there.  I hope it has the same fun vibe.

And speaking of fun, let’s take a look at the FREE fun events happening this week (March 10-March 16th):

TUESDAY MARCH 10TH
Bach (not a misspelling) to the Future in Berkeley

WEDNESDAY MARCH 11TH
Town Hall to end homelessness in S.F.

THURSDAY MARCH 12TH
Irish American Festival events all over S.F.

FRIDAY MARCH 13TH
Berkeley Critical Mass Bike Event

SATURDAY MARCH 14TH
St. Patrick’s Day Parade in S.F.

SUNDAY MARCH 15TH
Vintage Paper Fair in Walnut Creek

Have a great week!
