May in the Bay Area is a perfect time to hit the hiking trails, and around here there’s lots of open space to explore. If are hiking at the right time of day and you keep your eyes open, you might catch a glimpse of some of the myriad species of wild life that inhabit this beautiful region. Hawks and buzzards sail through the air, pack rat nests are abundant, coyotes howl in the hills, turkeys gobble, foxes hunt, opossums skuttle and racoons, our close urban neighbors, rattle around in unsealed garbage cans.
In some locations we share the hills with grazing cattle. Believe it or not, some members of the local herds can be unpredictable and often aggressive, especially moms with calves. Luckily, my alma mater, UC Berkeley, has come up with a trail hikers guide to dealing with cattle. It’s called “Sharing Open Space”, and we who walk with through pastures with dogs are strongly encouraged to read it. Your average cow sees your beloved canine, even my small terrier, as a potential threat.
Stay safe on your rambles, and if you’re in a festive mood, here’s some options for you:
- Many local Museums have Free Admission Days start the beginning of every month. Here’s an online list you can access.
- Hawaiian May Day Celebration at the Alameda County Fair
- Himalayan Fair at Live Oak Park in Berkeley
- Jazz on Fourth Street Festival in Berkeley
- Oakland Greek Festival
- Contra Costa County Fair in Antioch
- Chocolate and Chalk Festival in Berkeley
- Walnut Creek Art and Wine Festival
Have a terrific week enjoying the beauty and festivities that abound in our marvelous Bay Area!
