Weird Wednesday: Odd Real Estate Facts

After yesterday’s Giants game (10 to zip!! Ya gotta be kidding me!), it might be hard to face today with a smile. Fortunately, I discovered some pretty wierd, funny practices and facts that relate to the never humdrum world of real estate to distract you.

I thought I’d take the opportunity, and the naturally alliterative words “Weird” and “Wednesday”, to present one to you every week  on Wednesday until I run out.  Kind of an early Halloween Treat.  Here’s #1. Enjoy.

Halloween in the East Bay

pumpkin

Halloween is one of our favorite holidays. Any day that revolves around candy is A-Okay at our house.  We usually like to limit our sugar intake, and sweets for us are definately a “sometime food”  as Cookie Monster might say.

In the early days we worried about our kids eating too many sweets on Halloween, but living on a hill made the quantity they collected self-limiting.  Most of the houses in our neighborhood had front doors that could be reached only by climbing many, many stairs.  After a half a block, the young-uns were staggering like the walking dead and way too tired to keep collecting candy.

Here are some terrific, candy-free ideas for the coming week of scary fun.

TUESDAY the 28th of October
Halloween & Day of the Dead Festival in Berkeley

WEDNESDAY  the 29th of October
Halloween Ghost Walk in San Francisco

THURSDAY the 30th of October
Bay Area (Mad? Probably not.) Science Festival

FRIDAY the 31st of October
Halloween Blacklight Art Show in Alameda

SATURDAY the 1st of November
Robot Zoo, among other cool things, at AT&T Park

SUNDAY the 2nd of November
First Sunday Free at the Oakland Museum

Wishing you have a safe and Happy Halloween. . .

. . .and Don’t be spooked by the housing market!  I can make buying or selling your East Bay Home a  treat,  AND REMEMBER: I’m never too busy, even while handing out Halloween candy, to field your questions regarding Bay Area real estate or to handle your referals.

Carbon Footprint Savvy? Want HIGH Walk Score East Bay Homes

walk

Walk Scores identify properties that are close to all the amenities and conveniences you’d want for your practical and entertainment needs.  Lately, a lot have shown up on the MLS, and I capture them and put them on my web site as a service to my buyers.

If you’re interested in WALK SCORE HOMES go Berkeley Area Neighborhoods on my What’s Next Homes website.  This site has several pages dedicated to homes in various great East Bay neighborhoods that have walk scores from 80-90 (described as very walk-able), all the way to 90-100 (walker’s paradise).  Most are also close to special Berkeley Area attractions.

How’s that for bringing your enjoyment up and your energy needs down!

MyREAlert, Coldwell Banker’s Home Search engine, is one stop shopping for walk score properties or any that you specify in terms of price, size, and location show up in your email as soon as they appear on the MLS, and everything else you might want to know about the neighborhoods are also included.  Call me at 510-527-0174 and I’ll sign you up!

I’m eager to make buying or selling your East Bay Home a breeze,  AND REMEMBER: I’m never too busy, even during game days, to field your questions regarding Bay Area real estate, or to handle your referals.

If you or your friends or relatives are interested in specific information from a local agent about buying or selling a home in the Berkeley Area,  give me a call at 510-527-0174.  You’ll be glad you did.

Mobile Devices, Real Estate, and YOU

Having worked in IT in the very early days, before I became a real estate broker, it amazes me to see how much power and capability hand held devices have.  In the olden days, whole rooms were devoted to computer systems that still couldn’t do as much as your average I-Phone.  It boggles the mind.

For example, using my mobile  I got to stay abreast of the first game of the World Series while composing an offer for one of my buyer clients.

My clients, in fact all my buyers,  work their mobile devices to find their dream homes. These terrific tools help them them find homes that match their desires, analyze neighborhoods, evaluate schools, figure out their home mortgages, and generally make their property search simpler and more informed.

MobileFriendly
MyREAlert, Coldwell Banker’s Home Search engine, is one stop shopping for information like that.  Properties that you specify in terms of price, size, and location show up in your email as soon as they appear on the MLS, and everything else you might want to know about the neighborhoods are also included.  Call me at 510-527-0174 and I’ll sign you up!

With the dismal failure of the Raiders, 49ers, and Cal Bears this weekend, our hopeful hearts turn to the GIANTS!

The upcoming World Series, I predict, will render the streets  empty and sports bars full most of the week.

Of course, there are many who are not baseball fans, and for those I will list a few free Bay Area activities occuring even during game days.  Let’s see what we have:

TUESDAY OCTOBER 21ST
Exploratorium Lab and Lunch

WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 22ND
Laughter Yoga Class at UCSF

THURSDAY OCTOBER 23RD
Lunchtime Dance Installation at UN Plaza in SF

FRIDAY OCTOBER 24TH
Free Classical Music by the Bay

SATURDAY OCTOBER 25TH
Sugar Skull making at Richmond Art Center

SUNDAY OCTOBER 26TH

WARNING! RENT SCAMS IN THE BAY AREA

buyersimage

When my Blake Street co-listing went on the market, I was surprised by how many people called me asking if it was for rent.  We checked our sites and saw that it was clearly marked as a home for sale, so where were these rental inquiries coming from?

Today a new client called about a property in Oakland. She found it on Trulia, and thought it was for rent.  She said:

“There is an individual trying to rent the house.  I inquired and was told I was approved to rent the house but they needed me to send money to get the keys to view it.  Is the house for rent?”

It’s a good thing she called. I talked to the agent, and was assured the property was for sale.

THIS IS A FRAUD, and not an uncommon one: the thief scans for new listings, then advertises them “for rent,” with viewings subject to some kind of advance payment, then collects your money and disappears.  Or worse.

Always talk to a real estate agent. They can find out for sure if a home is really for rent or the object of a scam.

AND REMEMBER: I’m never too busy to field any of your questions regarding Bay Area real estate, or handle your referals.  If you or your friends or relatives are interested in specific information from a local agent about buying or selling a home in the Berkeley Area,  give me a call at 510-527-0174.  You’ll be glad you did.

Free Fun in the Bay Area

blue angels

Hope you enjoyed Fleet Week.  It was quite amazing to see the Blue Angels soaring over Sunday’s  Raider’s Game! Unfortunately, the Angels must be Charger fans because as soon as they made their impressive sweep the Raider’s started to lose.  The defense didn’t,  the offense couldn’t, and what looked like a 1 in the win column flipped back to a 0.

Well, Go Giants, and Go 49ers.  Hope these teams do us proud, but whether they win or lose we won’t let it effect our good time! Lets see what else we can do to have fun in the Bay Area this week.

TUESDAY OCTOBER 14TH
Playtesting Bash in Oakland

WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 15TH
Litquake is back, all you readers

THURSDAY OCTOBER 16TH
Dreamforce, an innovator’s conference in SF

FRIDAY OCTOBER 17TH
Win Tickets to see American Nomad at Ashkenaz

SATURDAY OCTOBER 18TH
Free Art and Science Days at the Exploratorium

SUNDAY OCTOBER 19TH

Want Business? Take a Vacation

I know it seems strange, but every time I decide to take a vacation I get very busy.
Tomorrow, as I mentioned in Monday’s blog, the family and I are traveling to Seattle, but first I have to write and send an offer for one of my buyer clients and refer out two more sets of buyer clients–who are also ready to write–to some very supportive collegues at Coldwell Banker.
So. . . regarding this graphic from California Association of Realtors about Buyer Optimisim,  I would have to emphatically agree!
